Assistive Technology Accommodations in Higher Education

Students and parents are often surprised to learn that the process of obtaining accommodations, such as assistive technology, in college and other postsecondary programs is very different than in K-12 public schools. This is because the legal requirements are different.

When a student leaves the K-12 setting and moves on to higher education, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) no longer applies. Instead, civil rights laws for people with disabilities, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, regulate how postsecondary programs must accommodate the needs of students with disabilities.

In higher education, the student is responsible for contacting the appropriate program at the school to identify themselves as a student with a disability and to request necessary accommodations. The student must also provide paperwork that documents his or her disability. If the student does not identify him or herself as a student with a disability in need of accommodations, the college is not obligated to provide accommodations to the student.

Usually the school’s disability support office can help students through the process of arranging necessary accommodations. To ensure that colleges provide reasonable and appropriate accommodations, the student may be asked to supply the school with documentation such as a list of accommodations that have been used successfully in the past or a recent IEP from high school.

It is a good idea for the student to request accommodations prior to each school term rather than waiting until they find it difficult to complete the coursework. A student who needs books and other instructional materials in alternative formats, such as audio, large print, or Braille, should request these items early enough so that the material is ready when classes begin.

Although colleges may provide assistive devices as reasonable accommodations, they are not required to and may not provide the most sophisticated technology available. It is acceptable for a college to provide different technology than what the student prefers or is familiar with.

The availability of accommodations in higher education settings often varies, depending on the college or program the student attends. The following table provides a sampling of common accommodation options for areas in education. It is not intended to be comprehensive.

Tips for Transition Planning and Accommodations

1. Learn about the latest assistive technology options that could be useful to your son or daughter now and in the future by contacting PACER’s Simon Technology Center. For a listing of AT Resource Centers in your area, visit the Alliance for Technology Access Web site at www.ataccess.org. (PACER is an AT Resource Center)

2. Actively involve your son or daughter in the selection and set-up of any assistive technology they use. The youth should learn to manage their assistive equipment independently or feel comfortable directing support providers to assist with the set-up.

3. Involve your son or daughter in creating a student file for assistive technology and other accommodations that includes documentation of disability, accommodation needs, technology needs, technology emergency back-up plan, and contact information for repair services.

4. Start exploring postsecondary institutions with your son or daughter if he or she is interested in pursuing higher education. Talk with others to identify colleges that offer strong support programs for students with disabilities. Be sure to make an appointment with the disabilities support office to find out what kind of accommodations the school provides and whether they adequately meet your child’s needs.

Sharon's Story

Sharon, a first-year college student, has a learning disability that affected her reading and writing. In high school, all her books were on tape, she took her exams separately, and she was allowed extra time to complete them. Sharon did not to request accommodations when she began her first year of college because she felt she could manage without the additional support. At mid-semester, however, she had failed two mid-term exams, and she became concerned about passing her classes. Sharon decided to contact her school’s student services office to request accommodations she had previously received in high school. She also contacted her instructors and informed them of her disability and the accommodations she needed. As a result, Sharon improved her test scores and passed both of the classes she had been failing.

Apps for Special Education: App Store, App Shopper, Moms with Apps

App Corner

App has been used as a shorthand term for “applications” and has become popular to indicate mobile application. App grew even more popular with the opening of Apple's App Store, which can be accessed through iTunes. In the “App Corner” in Tech Notes we will highlight mobile applications that are universally designed or meet an educational need. This month we highlight apps that help you navigate the variety of apps currently available.

App Store - by Apple The App Store icon is a built in app that comes standard with the iPad. Tap the App Store icon and you’ll find over 65,000 apps made for iPad. There are apps for anything and everything and you can search, purchase and download them right from your device (wifi or 3G connection required). Best of all, many of the apps are free.
AppShopper - by AppShopper.com, LLC AppShopper keeps you up to date on the latest news with apps via both the app and the companion web site www.appshopper.com. Users create a free account and are able to track the apps they own via My Apps and the apps they would like to own via a customized Wish List. The app will notify users when an app price increases in price, goes on sale, is available for free and when the app is updated. Additional features include searching by the following categories: Popular Apps, What's New, Wish List, My Apps. Moms with Apps - by BabyBlinks Moms with Apps is a group of parents who develop educational apps. They started with a web site and blog and feature a popular Free App Friday. The free app gives parents and educators an additional way to interact with their content and collection of apps they have deemed parent and child friendly. They aim to assist parents and educators to identify apps that address the needs of their children and students. Developed in collaboration with the Moms with Apps development group, nearly 400 developers have cataloged and categorized over 1,000 apps by their educational value and appropriate age group. Web Spotlight: Khan Academy

Math can be a tough subject for even the strongest of students and it’s easy to fall behind or miss a key concept. Even adults might find that there are holes missing in their math knowledge. Luckily there is a great free website to help your youth, young adults, or even older adults work on math skills and more. This site is called Khan Academy.

When Salman Khan started creating YouTube videos to tutor his cousins who lived far away he never expected them to be so popular with the online community. As the videos grew and the views racked up he created a website to hold them all called Khan Academy. 2,200 videos later you can find instruction on anything from basic math to advanced calculus.

The videos alone would be a great resource but Khan academy offers some interesting tools to motivate and assist users. Once you sign in to the website you are presented with a map that lets you see what skills you have to master to learn more complex concepts. Once you click on a concept you can watch a video demonstrating how it works. After each instructional video you are presented with a handful of practice questions. Only after you complete 10 questions in a row does site give you an award stating that you have mastered that concept. Along the way you can earn badges that represent your accomplishments on the site.

If you are a parent or a teacher you can set yourself up as a “Coach” where you can track a users progress and help them if they are struggling in a certain area. The site features detailed progress reports and graphs for a single or multiple students. In addition to Math Khan Academy has added videos on Biology, Chemistry, Astronomy, History and more. The Tots 'n Tech Research Institute (TnT) is an inter-university collaboration between Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), Philadelphia, and Arizona State University (ASU), Tempe. TnT's mission is to provide up-to-date information and resources about adaptations--including assistive technology--to use with infants and toddlers for state education agencies, Early Intervention providers of all disciplines, and families. Product Spotlight: My Focus Glasses

My Focus glasses is a low tech tool designed to help people who struggle with visual distractions, including those with ADHD, Asperger's, Autism and more to cope with visual distractions while improving the ability to process information. The glasses were creaed by inventor and entrepreneur Ken Finochiaro who had the idea of creating a tool for reading that would address the issue of visual distraction. Increased focus would allow for improved comprehension.

The design blocks peripheral vision and features a mirrored finish that gives them the look of sunglasses. There are styles/sizes for youth, teens and adults as well as an over-fit frame which rests on top of existing eyeglasses. The cost of a pair of My Focus glasses is $69.95.

A variety of My Focus Glasses are available for check out in the Simon Technology Center (STC) Assistive Technology Lending Library. Assistive Technology May Help Your Child Succeed

When a learner is struggling in any the area of life and nothing seems to help, both parents and professionals often turn to technology as a solution. Using what is called assistive technology (AT), a toddler can color with an adapted crayon, a teenager can use word prediction software to become a successful writer, and an adult can use speech-to-text technology to be gainfully employed.

While it is clear that some children with disabilities can benefit from AT, parents need to be proactive about seeking services for their child and become familiar with the law that ensures AT services are provided by public schools.

An age of technology

Technology is rapidly advancing, sometimes on a daily basis. New technology changes not only how we learn and engage with the world, but how we function in daily life.

Consider Aimee Mullins, an athlete who set world records running on prosthetic legs at the 1996 Paralympics. Her high-tech limbs help her reach the potential she has to be a runner, a model, and an actress.

Consider Bridget Thomson, who became the first student in Minnesota to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) using speech-to-text as an accommodation. Speech-to-text technology helped Bridget reach her potential.

Despite the fact that technology can help children achieve their dreams, students with disabilities are not systematically evaluated to see if they would benefit from AT services. Anecdotal evidence suggests that only 3 to 5 percent of students with disabilities have assistive technology written into their Individualized Education Program (IEP), according to research conducted by Dave Edyburn of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Although sometimes students use AT even though it is not included their IEPs, a large percentage of students who would benefit from AT are not receiving services. Thats why its important for parents to be proactive and to make sure AT services are considered for their children.

AT and the law

While AT is a relatively young field, the laws that govern it are not new. Schools must consider the use of AT at least annually for every student who has an IEP and may benefit from it.

Assistive technology includes the devices, software, and services a student needs to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE), which is guaranteed by a federal law called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). AT should also be considered to help a student be educated in the least restrictive environment (LRE), also ensured by IDEA.

Tech Tip: Viewing YouTube Videos with no Internet Connection

YouTube and other online video sites store a wealth of great resources. To play one of their videos you just open a web browser, visit the video site and search for the video or types of videos you would like to watch. Sometimes there is a video you would like to access but there is no access to the internet or the access to YouTube or other video websites is blocked. Fortunately, there is a way to download YouTube videos to your computer where you can view them when you don't have access to an internet connection.

YouTube does not offer the option to download videos directly from their site but there are several other programs and tools available that do just that. For this example we are using a website called www.keepvid.com. First you locate the video you would like to download from YouTube. Next select and copy the website address or URL from your browser address bar. Now visit the website www.keepvid.com and paste the web address into the text box marked URL. Finally click on the Download button.

Keepvid runs a Java applet to convert the video into a form you can download. You will be asked to allow the applet to run the first time you use the site. After the conversion is complete you are given several different quality options from low to high that you can download and play on your computer. Since the video is now loaded on your computer you no longer need the internet to play it!

Library Corner: Software Programs to Help Students Practice Educational Skills Over the Summer

There are many software programs in the library that can help students keep up their educational skills over the summer including programs for literacy skills, writing, math and more. Literacy programs can help students practice skills such as decoding, comprehension, spelling, etc. Writing programs can help students with composition and paragraph and sentence structure. Math programs, range from number identificaiton to algerbra, depending on a student's skills.

There are a variety of tools available in the Simon Technology Center Lending Library for parents and professionals in Minnesota. We have highlighted three of those choices:

Literacy: Super Star Phonics Series by Help Me 2 Learn

The development of phonics is an important foundation literacy skill. The Super Star Phonics Series by Help Me2 Learn includes software programs for phonics development. In fun interactive activities phonics skills are introduced and reinforced. Software is available for both Mac and PC, with editions for home and school. Available titles include: Letters & Numbers (ages 2-7), Phonics 1a - Vowel Sounds (ages 4-8), Phonics 1b - Consonant Sounds (ages 4-8), Phonics 2a - Intermediate Level (ages 5-9), Phonics 2b - Intermediate Level II (ages 7-11), Phonics 3a - Advanced Level II with Sports (ages 7-11) and Phonics 3b - Advanced Level II with Sports (ages 7-11). Math: Mighty Math Series by River Deep

Mighty Math is a collection of software to help learners with math concepts such as basic match concepts and problem solving, fractions, algebra, geometry, and more. The Mighty Math series take place in a variety of settings and uses engaging characters. Grow slides are available that allow the user to adjust the difficulty level of the activity. Within each game is an array of both topics and levels of play. Available titles include: Astro Algebra, Calculating Crew, Carnival Countdown, Cosmic Geometry, Number Heros and Zoo Zillions.

Writing: The Writing Trek

This multimedia program features authentic language arts projects, activities, and assignments that build writing competence and encourage creativity. Trek is a language learning adventure set in a variety of settings that will inspire students to write and read more. Challenges include writing historical fiction, poetry, persuasive essays, and research reports. Journeys into Concepts strands, skills, and Internet research refine student writing. Models, Extension activities, and a Reading List are provided for each Project.

Communication Corner: Smart 128

Get Creative - Assistive Technology for Your Infant or Toddler

Ever thought that something as simple as a roll of masking tape could help your child with a disability, or that the cookie sheet sitting in your cupboard could be used for something other than baking delicious treats? These items, along with many other materials you probably already have in your home, can be easily converted into assistive technology (AT) devices to support your infant or toddler with a disability.

AT refers to simple devices, tools, technologies or services that can help children with disabilities improve or maintain their functional capabilities. For example, AT could include:

• Universally made toys that are designed to meet the needs of most children, regardless of ability

• A thick grip attached to the page of a book that helps a child turn pages independently

• A picture parents use to communicate “all done”

To an appropriate extent, AT devices and supports should be provided to children in natural environments, such as a home, childcare setting or community outing. When deciding if AT is right for your child, first identify his or her needs. Ask yourself, “What does my child need help doing?” Your Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) team can help you determine what AT could benefit your child.

Some forms of AT, such as electronic equipment, can be expensive, but there are also plenty of inexpensive ways that parents and families can use assistive technology by adjusting or adapting everyday items. Here are a few simple AT ideas from Tots ‘n Tech (tnt.asu.edu), a research institute that conducts studies regarding AT for infants and toddlers.

Coupon Holder Communication Display

For children who can’t communicate verbally, it can be a challenge to express their wants and needs, especially around mealtimes. Use the Coupon Holder Communication Display to help your child communicate his or her thoughts and choose what to eat. Fill a magnet-backed coupon holder (available at most dollar stores) with cards that represent food, beverages or actions, such as “more” and “all done.” Place the holder on the fridge where the child can reach it. The next time you make dinner, let your child decide what’s on the menu!

Cookie Sheet Games

Help your child learn to play games cooperatively by making your own version of a popular childhood game, Tic-Tac-Toe. On a cookie sheet, create a colorful Tic-Tac-Toe grid using electrician’s tape. Use magnetic X’s and O’s for pieces, or glue magnets to the bottoms of poker chips. For children with low fine motor skills, glue plastic loops to the game pieces. This game can be enjoyed by everyone in the family.

Noodle Protection

Many children love grocery shopping with their parents, but for children with spasms or who jerk uncontrollably, it’s nearly impossible to sit safely in a shopping cart. The next time you go grocery shopping with your child, try cutting swim noodles into sections to fit over the metal parts of the cart (available seasonally at Walmart, Target or sporting goods stores). Now enjoy shopping without having to worry!

Masking Tape Path

This idea is great for children with limited vision who are just starting to crawl or walk around the house. With a roll of regular masking tape, map out a path for your child to follow – from the bedroom to the bathroom, from the bathroom to the kitchen, and so on. As a fun activity, use the masking tape to create a maze for your child and help him or her complete it. Who knew masking tape could be so much fun?

Slippy Slide

If you constantly have to clean up spills in the kitchen because your child knocks his or her bowl over, try the Slippy Slide. Use a suction cup designed for soap to hold the dish in place on the table or highchair tray. Underneath the dish, place a plastic mat (you might have to cut the mat to size).

Adapted Crayon Holder

Children can spend hours entertaining themselves with nothing more than a few crayons and a coloring book. To help your child grip crayons more easily, use an empty 35mm film canister (available free at any store that handles film processing) or an old prescription bottle and cut an “X” in the top and bottom. Insert the crayon through the holes. Then stand back and watch your child create beautiful masterpieces!

These suggestions are just a few of the hundreds of easy, inexpensive ideas for converting everyday materials into assistive technology supports for your child with a disability. With just a little ingenuity and creativity, parents can use assistive technology to help infants and toddlers learn important developmental and learning skills they will use their entire lives.

Assistive technology helps individuals interact with their environment when limited by a disability, medical condition or age. People who use assistive technology sometimes outgrow the piece of technology or simply get a new one. These pieces of discarded assistive technology can be in good condition and may have a lot of service life left in them. They can be useful to someone who might have limited income or does not want to pay the full price of a new one. Recycling and reusing assistive technology not only makes sense for our environment, but it makes sense economically.

New ways of bringing together buyers and sellers have been popping up all over the nation. No longer are you limited to the local classifieds. Websites such as EBay and Craigslist have been very useful. And there are many resources that are specific to assistive technology. A good place to start looking is the Simon Technology Center SUPER Service. At SUPER (Still Useful Product and Equipment Referral) you can find items such as walkers, wheelchairs, communication devices, as well as other items having to do with assistive technology. Tech Tip: Choosing a Default Program to Open Files on Your Computer

Sometimes when you attempt to open a document, a picture or a hyperlink, your computer may access a non-preferred program. For example, when opening a picture your computer may open with an advanced photo editing tool (which takes a long time to load) versus a picture viewer which would match the purpose of simply viewing the picture. Or you click on a link and nothing happens because the browser that is trying to open the link does not know what to do with the link. Fortunately there is an easy solution.

The following information will help you change the default program or the program that is set up to open the file type when you double click on it.

Instructions for Windows

Right click on the file that you wish to open using a different program. If you are using Windows 98 or older you will need to hold down the shift key and right click. In the window that appears go down to “Open With” and then choose “Choose Default Program.” A new window will appear with a list of Programs to choose from. Click on the application you would like this file to open with when you double click. If you would like all files like this to open with the program you selected then make sure to check the checkbox marked “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.” Now click OK and you’re all done!

Instruction for Mac

Right click on the file you wish to open using a different program. Choose “Get Info” from the menu. In the window that appears, click on the button right below the words “Open with” to see a selection of programs that can open that file. Select the program you want. If you would like all files like this to open with the program you selected then click the button marked “Change All.” Now close the window and you are all done!

App Corner: The New Mac App Store

The main success of the iOS (mobile operating system) on every iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPd can be drawn back to the App store where you can find countless low cost appliations to run on your mobile device. In early January 2011, Apple launched the App Store for the Mac creating a one stop spot for Apple users to buy and download their favorite Mac programs. Developers for the iOS are also releasing desktop versions of their popular mobile apps. So now you can have your favorite app as a software application on your Mac desktop.

In order to access the new Mac App Store you need to be running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, the latest version of the Mac operating system. The good news if your computer meets the minimum system requirements the upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 only costs $29. Speech recognition is becoming more accurate with each version released. the training time required has decreased while the accuracy has incrased. One ingenious educator is taking advantage of these improvements. She wears the microphone while she is teaching the class while the student in need of text support uses the text provided by the software as the basis for note taking. The accuracy level is likely to vary depending on a variety of factors including room acoustics and quality of the microphone, however it generally produces enough accurate information to ber a supplement for the student that needs it. The text can also provide the context for instruction in editing, grammar, and spelling.

Using new and cutting edge technology and at the request of their many fans they started recording video and audio conversations about what was new in technology. iPad Today is one of several shows that they feature. iPad Today show hosts share their opinion on the best apps and the most helpful tools.

Did You Know: Project Lifesaver

What kind of technology can help families find a loved one who may wander because of disabilities or related disorders? The STC receives numerous requests for helpful information on this topic. While GPS technology can be helfpul, it doesn't always work. An organization called Project Lifesaver offers an option. It trains public safety agencies to be first responders when an individual wearing a Project Lifesaver beacon goes missing. The beacon, worn on the wrist, ankle or sewn into clothing, emits a radio signal that responders can search for when Project Lifesaver is activated.

Through trained public safety agencies, Project Lifesaver provdes a timely response when loved ones become lost. Its mission is to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children who wander due to a variety of disabilities including Alzheimer's, autism, and other related conditions or disorders.

Did you know that 24 counties in Minnesota participate in Project Lifesaver? Volunteer Coordinator Bob Parrot, from the Ramsey County Sheriff Department shared that once Project Lifesaver is activated, the search time is generally less than 30 minutes. To activate Project Lifesaver, someone simply notifies the sheriff's department about the missing person. Bob is available to answer questions about Project Lifesaver in MN and to give you the information to get Project Lifesaver started in your county. Boardmaker Activity Pad The Boardmaker Activity Pad takes interactive activities off the computer and into the hands of the learner through the Activity Pad. Similar to other Mayer Johnson products users have the ability to create educational pages on the computer and then deliver them to the student via the Activity Pad. Each pocket or page holder is programed for the user. Boardmaker is not required although Boardmaker does come with pre-programmed layouts for the Activity Pad.
7-Message Take N Talk Go! Board This communication board allows you to record seven 35 second messages. The messages are played by removing or replacing one of the 3" by 3" icon frames. The pocket in the front can be used for storage. Dimensions of Board: 29" x 5" x 3".

Edistorm is a virtual online environment where an individual or a group of people can brainstorm and organize their ideas. Ideas are generated using virtual sticky notes. Sticky notes can be color coded, edited and moved around. Each new brainstorming session is called a “storm”. The free version allows unlimited public storms. To gather a group of people to a brain storming session or to check out a storm you have created you can either send them an email invitation or send the the web link. Educational Uses for the Pulse Smartpen by Livescribe

The Pulse Smartpen by Livescribe is a pen with a built-in microphone that has the ability to record audio while you are writing. What separates the Smartpen from a standard digital recorder is that it syncs the recording with the written notes. The pen's built in camera records what you are writing while at the same time the digital recorder is capturing the audio. The user can easily locate and playback a desired part of the recording by tapping on the corresponding section of the notes with the pen.

The Pulse Smartpen requires the use of special paper. The paper can be purchased as spiral bound notebooks or printed off using a template from the Livescribe website. Directions for printing for both Mac and PC can be found at Livescribe.com

The newest version of the pen, called the Echo, comes in a 4G and 8G version, ranging in price from $169-200. The original version of the pen, the Pulse Smartpen, is available (while supplies last) for about $129. Also new to Livescribe is a Smartpen app store where free and for fee apps are available. Current apps include a Spanish language dictionary, card games, paper piano, and a spelling app. You can find more information on apps at Livescribe.com.

Here is a short list of ways both teachers and students can use the pen to enhance learning.

The pen can be used by students with dysgraphia, auditory processing, and memory or attention deficits when taking notes in class. The recording can capture information the student is unable to write down while taking notes. The student can review the recording later and add the missing information to his or her notes.Teachers can pre-record text to be read for assignments and tests. The students can playback the recording as many times as needed.

Teachers or students can record to-do lists, due dates, and instructions for assignments.
Teachers can make flashcards and label objects for students to learn new vocabulary. This can be especially helpful for teaching foreign languages or for speech and language practice.

Teachers can make “pencasts” with instructions for an assignment or problem, such as step-by-step instructions for solving a math problem, and post it online for students to access from home. The audio recording will play in-sync with the written steps of the problem.

For visually impaired students, teachers can record questions for a test or assignment and then apply tactile bumps for the student to locate and activate the audio. The teacher can also record audio description of graphs and pictures that the student is unable to see.

Paper communication boards can be made by printing communication boards on the special paper and adding a voice recording to each symbol or text word with the Smartpen.

Portable Word Processing Helps Students with Writing, Reading Impairments

For students who have difficulty with the physical or sensory aspects of handwriting or who have reading impairments, using a word prcessing application or program can be a big help. It can give students more independence, confidence, and the ability to efficiently complete written work. Portable notetakers and netbooks - available for a fraction of the cost of computers or laptops - are two options to investigate.

Notetakers

Notetakers are electronic word processors with full-size keyboards. Smaller than laptops and larger than netbooks, they typically are more durable and less expensive than either. A variety of notetakers are available.

Renaissance Learning (renlearn.com) sells four models: NEO, NEO2, DANA and DANA Wireless.

Writer Learning Systems (writerlearning.com) sells two models with various preloaded features: Fusion and The Writer.

The StudentMate by One2OneMate (one2onemate.com) is one of the more robust notetakers on the market, with many additional features and applications.

CalcuScribe by CalcuScribe (calcuscribe.com) comes with an interactive calculator for assistance with arithmetic, algebra, and trigonometry.

Some notetakers also have additional features that provide extra accessibility. They may, for example, have:

A word prediction feature that can help reduce keystrokes and provide spelling and grammar support. Word prediction suggests a list of likely words after the user types only a few characters.
A text-to-speech feature that provides auditory feedback and support for text that is typed or appears in the word prediction application.
Organization applications such as calendars, to-do lists, alarms, and the like. These applications provide an electronic method for schedule and task organization.

Netbooks

Netbooks are very similar to laptops in appearance and operation, but they are smaller, lighter, and less powerful. Although intended to be used for basic functions such as email and Internet browsing, these devices also work well as word processors.

Most netbooks run one of the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows 7 starter, or Linux Ubuntu. Those with a Windows operating system allow the user to install additional assistive technology programs. However, check to be sure the program's system requirements are compatible with the netbook's small memory and processing capacity. Additional programs may also be installed on devices using Linux, but fewer assistive technology programs are compatible with this operating system.

Most netbooks do not have CD/DVD drives, but they typically have USB ports for data transfer and a place to connect an external CD/DVD drive. Netbooks can be obtained easily online or from stores such as Best Buy, Office Max, Radio Shack, Target, and WalMart.

Choosing a Device

Which device might be best for your student? The key factors to consider are durability, screen size, and availability of additional applications or programs, such as word prediction, text-to-speech, or applications for organization

With so many choices, you may want to try out some devices before you buy one. Assistive technnology lending libraries, such as the one at PACER's Simon Technology Center, and some vendors might allow you to borrow a device for a trial period to determine how useful it would be for the individual.

For students with handwriting difficulties or reading impairments, notetakers and netbooks can be a boon. At a fraction of the cost of computers or laptops, these devices help users gain independence, confidence, and the ability to efficiently complete written work.

Misunderstood Minds is a companion web site to the PBS special Misunderstood Minds. This PBS special shared the lives and struggles of five individuals with learning difficulties. It was designed to help others understand the learning process, give insights into learning disabilities and share strategies for responding to learning disabilities. The web site gives viewers the opportunity to experience a learning difficulty firsthand. For example, in the attention category a viewer is able to simulate reading a passage with distractions or attempt to follow directions with auditory distractions. Content on the site includes an introduction to the basics, an overview of the difficulties a learner might experience, and how a parent or educator might respond. The activities are not only great for individual learning but is also a resource for providing disability awareness. Another resource to check out is the Developing Minds Multimedia Library which contains a collection of videos that explore learning differences.

Tech Tip: Web Etiquette and Safety

Increasingly websites offer interactive content like comments and message boards. The same rules used in email should be applied to these as well and are doubly important for social networking sites such as Facebook, where more and more people might view what you write. Consider that many current or potential employers may check social networking sites to get a clearer idea of who you are. The last thing you want them to see is some rude comment you made. Also remember that even though the event you attended recently was great, some pictures should not be loaded online. Your digital reputation can be as important as your “real world” reputation, so the same etiquette rules apply to JOHNLOL12351 online as they do to real world John Smith. Web Safety Using the Web and searching with Google can allow you to find almost any information in the world.

However, like the real world, there are some dangerous neighborhoods that you should avoid. It is like insurance for your computer: You may not need it all the time, but when you do, you'll be glad you have it.

Apple offers security updates through their software update program and Microsoft offers their own security suite called Security Essentials.

Tech Tip: Online File Hosting

September marks back to school time. Busy students prepare for reports and essays on flash drives or using email to send a file to home. This tech tip is about using services that allow you to upload files to retrieve anywhere you have access to a computer and the internet.

Online file hosting is popular because as long as you have a computer or mobile device and an internet connection you can access, edit and create new folders and documents. This is great to have if your forget to bring the files with you or email them to yourself. Many sites that have free file hosting.

One file sharing service is called Dropbox and it allows you to hold 2 GB of whatever you need for free. It works on Windows, Mac and some mobile devices such as iPod and Android. You can load files to use privately or load files to share with others. Free registration is required and a companion program is loaded on your PC, Mac or mobile device. The site offers detailed instructions and a variety of supports to get you started.

Another file sharing service is called MediaFire. MediaFire will hold an unlimited number of files as long as the files are under 200MB each. It is available for PC and Mac and offers a wide variety of sharing possibilities.

If you or your student needs a place to store and share work, online file sharing is a very easy and effective way to meet this need.

Tech Tip: Cleaning Your Keyboard and Mouse

Is your keyboard dirty and filled with crumbs? Does your mouse feel sticky? Don't worry! Here are a few easy and cost effective ways to solve these problems. First, gather the following items from an office supply store.

Rubbing alcohol wipes (preferable fast drying ones)
A compressed air can (or air can duster)
Lint-free paper towels

Once you are ready to clean, turn off your computer and unplug both the keyboard and the mouse. To clean the keyboard, you will need the air duster. There should be a small tube that connects to the end of the can. Connect the tube to the can, and in short bursts, spray in between the keys in a right-to-left motion through each row. Make sure to spray in the corners of the rows where dirt builds up while dusting. After you've finished dusting, rub the alcohol wipes around the keys on the top of the keyboard face. Rub the top of the keys also. This is where most of the bacteria are found. Finally, wipe away any dirt on the keyboard face with the paper towels. To clean the mouse, use alcohol wipes to slowly rub both the top and sides of the mouse. Make sure to also wipe the scroll wheel. Next turn the mouse over and rub around the center of the mouse. Dirt in this area can cause the mouse to stick to the mouse pad or desk. To finish the job, gently rub the optical laser with a paper towel. Make sure to avoid pressing hard against the laser. Pressing too hard can cause the laser to incorrectly read the mouse movements, making the mouse difficult to use or even operate. Once you are finished cleaning, plug the mouse and keyboard into your computer.

By using these tips, you will see a great improvement in the operation of both your keyboard and mouse. Remember to tune in for next month's Tech Tip!

Creating an on-line e-pal program has the potential to help learner struggling with reading and writing to engage in writing for real purposes. Research shows that in order to improve reading and writing skills, students need to read and write MORE. Often times it is difficult to engage older learners who struggle with readin gand writing using traditional literacy activities. Barb Wollak, a speech and language pathologist in St. Paul, has paired her students with college students at Appalachian State University. The relationship has been rewarding for everyone! Check out Barb's tips for creating a successful e-pal program. Here are a few ideas:

1. Find a college with students studying to become teachers. contact a collaborating professor. the college students get to experience hands-on writing samples with real students while Secondary students get the opportunity to engage in reading and writing for real purposes.

2. Create a blog or wiki to provide additional experiences for "authentic" reading and writing. Check out how Barb and her students at Highland Park Junir High use a blog to ask questions, share opintions and much more at hpjh.blogspot.com

3. Contact parents and get them involved with the project. Inform them how you will handle privacy and safety. Monitor all e-mails, print them out, and send them home. You can make the experience more meaningful by including pictures on your blog. Be sure to get signed permission from parents and let them know that onky first names will be used

4. Establish an e-mail monitor on each end of the collaboration. the college students should be instructed to ssend a blind copy (bcc) of all e-mails to the person coordinating the e-pal program, including the last correspondence from school-aged e-pal.

5. Teach students how to use assistive technology like Co:Writer to help support their writing. The text the students create is your baseline date before you inmplement assistive technology. Watch their writing and reading skills improve over time as they ask you if they can write to their e-pal. Translation: "Can I read and write some more?"

E-mail Etiquette
E-mail has become the dominant form of communication for most people, especially in business settings. That is why it is important to be polite and aware of the types of e-mails you send. E-mails are digital and, like all digital files, you never know where they might end up one day. courts can even use e-mails as evidence, but let's take a step back.

As with all forms of communication, there are some unspoken rules of etiquette. Here are some you may or may not be aware of.

1. ALL CAPS MEANS YOU ARE YELLING! People don't like to be yelled at, even in cyberspace.
2. Sarcasm is great, not! Remember that e-mail is simply written language. Your written voice has no inflection. Thus, sarcasm can be hard to pick up. Think about how statements such as “I’m so angry I could hurt them” could be taken out of context. E-mails are digital and can be saved for an almost infinite amount of time, which means you never know when something you wrote might show up again.
3. Read your e-mails before you send them. This might seem obvious, but in our fast moving digital lives it can be very easy to skip this step. You may end up sending an e-mail that makes no sense or sending an e-mail to the wrong person. Spell check doesn't catch everything. Sometimes reading an e-mail outloud to yourself can help you catch inappropriate words or phrases you might have otherwise missed.
4. :-) ;-) LOL ROFL. Abbreviations and face symbols can be fun, but they can also be confusing to people who are not familiar with them. In some cases this may be misinterpreted. for instance, AIM for some people means Accessible Instructional Materials, bu to others it means AOL Instant Messenger. Just as using jargon can be rude in some cases, so can using abbreviations and symbols.

E-mail Safety
E-mail is the number one place to find virus and ”phishing“ scams. Viruses can come in e-mails as attachments. Never open an attachment that you are not 100% sure came from a safe place. If a friend sends you a strangely worded e-jail with an attachment, you might want to check with them first to make sure they really sent it, and that it is not a virus that infected your computer and is trying to spread itself.

Also be on the lookout for “phishing” scams. Phising is when a person tries to get you to send them sensitive information by pretending to be someone else. Your bank or financial Website will never ask you to send them account information, passwords or your social security numbers through e-mail. That is a red flag. If you get an alarming email from your bank, don't click on any links in the email; simply call the bank or visit their Website yourself to verify that the information is correct. Lastly don't click on links in e-mails sent to you by strangers; you can't be sure where any link will take you.

Technology: Devices, Software Can Help Young Children Communicate

It’s no secret that children have feelings, opinions, and desires they want to express. If your child has autism, developmental delays, or any other disability that makes communication difficult, you already know how frustrating and upsetting that impediment can be for you and your child.

What you may not know is that an array of communication devices and software can help. Known as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), these tools can help even very young children express their wants, develop stronger relationships with peers, and find inclusion in the classroom and elsewhere.

Here are two popular types of AAC you may want to consider for your child.

Picture Communication Symbols

Often the first form of AAC used by young children, picture communication symbols (PCS) consist of simple images showing objects, actions, and feelings. By pointing to a given symbol—a picture of a favorite toy, for example—your child can make choices and communicate his or her wants and needs. PCS software programs such as Boardmaker by Mayer-Johnson or Picture It by Slater Software allow you to create customized communication materials for your child. They usually contain a searchable graphics database to help you find specific symbols, such as images associated with a birthday party or your child’s morning routines. You also can use digital photos and images to create simple communication symbols and schedules.

Mid-tech Devices

If your child needs more support when communicating, a device that incorporates PCS and voice output may be a good option. These devices feature a recorded voice that “speaks” when the corresponding button or picture is activated. You may want to start with a simple one-message device such as the BigMack by AbleNet or Partner Plus Communicator by AMDI.

Once your child becomes familiar with how the device works, you may want a more advanced version that can expand his or her choices. A device with four message buttons and five levels, for example, would hold 20 pre-recorded messages. This feature provides a much broader vocabulary without additional programming and without overwhelming your child with more-complicated technology. The Go Talk 4+ by Attainment and SuperTalker by AbleNet, for example, have multiple buttons and levels.

Mid-tech devices can range from $10 to $2,500, so try out a few before making a purchase. Look for one that motivates your child, is appropriate for his or her abilities, and offers more advanced capabilities your child could use as his or her skills develop. Many assistive technology companies and centers offer “try before you buy” loan programs.

All people need to communicate. For young children whose disabilities interfere with their ability to share their ideas, feelings, needs, and wants, AAC can offer a solution.

The Cue Electronic Classroom Scheduler is a portable device designed to help students keep track of their own schedules and stay organized. Students can learn to program this tool themselves or parents and teachers can set it up to manage daily, weekly and monthly tasks. The AIM project is a collaboration of several organizations with the goal of providing information to parents and professionals supporting learners with Autism Spectrum Disorders ASD. By the time the project is complete AIM will contain over 60 modules on topics including assessment and identification, characteristics, evidence-based practices, transition to adulthood, employment and more. The modules take into consideration adult learning styles and are presented at a universal reading level with activities to support both those who are new to ASD and those who have advanced knowledge on ASD. The format includes a 15-minute introduction facilitated by moderators and a 45-minute question and answer session. All sessions and resources are archived. Tech Tip: Email Tools - Flags and Rules

Email has become so popular that for many people it is their main form of communication. That means many of us have to sort through countless messages every day! Let’s talk about two tools to help sort through and prioritize those messages.

Flags

Flags are a way of marking important emails that we need to respond to but can’t do it right away. In Microsoft Outlook flags can be found in the tool bar or in the right click menu labeled as “Follow up.” Simply click on or open an email and then click the picture of the flag. A little red flag will appear next to the email as a reminder that you need to come back to it later.

In Apple Mail you can flag an email by going to message in the menu bar or by right clicking (or control - clicking) and choosing mark - as flagged. This will also make a red flag appear to remind you to come back to that message later.

Rules

Rules are powerful tools that allow you to give your email program instructions on what to do with certain messages. For example you can create rules to alert you when you receive an email from certain people, automatically move an email to a special folder, or to automatically flag emails with specific words in the subject line. Rules can be become very complicated but here is a quick way to try them out.

The rules window will appear and you can tell outlook what conditions an email needs to meet to be part of the rule (i.e. From a certain person, words in the subject line, etc) and then customize the rule tell Outlook what to do with those emails (i.e. Move them to a folder, make an alert sound, etc).

Try Visual Social Supports to Improve Children’s Challenging Behavior

For some children with disabilities, new situations and transitions between activities can trigger challenging behaviors and anxiety. A strategy called visual social supports can help deal with those issues. Also called story boards, social scripting, and Social Stories,™* these short, illustrated narratives help a child understand, interpret, or ease into situations that might be new, confusing, or challenging. Proven effective at decreasing inappropriate behaviors such as hitting, screaming, and grabbing, such stories provide a visual means to understand otherwise non-visual information.

Whether you’re a parent or professional, you can create your own visual social supports. This article explains how to do it and looks at a sampling of software programs that can help you implement them for your child or student.

How to Begin

To identify where a visual social support might be helpful, look at the child’s day. When and where do behaviors and anxiety arise? Once you have that answer, you can begin creating the structure for your story.

Carol Gray, an educator who developed the concept of social stories, recommends including the following elements:

• Descriptive sentences are objective sentences that identify the most relevant factors in a social situation. They often answer “wh” questions—who, what, where, why, and when.

Today we are going to see a movie at the movie theater.

• Perspective sentences refer to other people’s thoughts, feelings, motivations, or beliefs. They help the child learn how others perceive various events.

Many people think seeing a movie in the theater is fun!

• Directive sentences present positive responses to a situation.

People at the movie theater wait quietly in line to buy their tickets. If the movie is popular, the line may be long. I will try to wait patiently.

• Affirmative sentences clarify statements and may convey values that most people hold. They also can emphasize key points and refer to laws or rules.

We will arrive at the theater early so we do not miss any of the movie, even if there is a long line. After buying our tickets, we can also purchase popcorn and juice. Adults may have popcorn with soda instead of juice.

• Control sentences identify personal strategies the individual will use to remember and use the information. These sentences are written by the individual after reviewing the social story. If the child cannot write, he or she could draw a picture instead.

Sometimes the line may not be long and we can be seated right away. When seated right away, we may have to watch commercials until the movie starts. During the movie we need to sit nicely and be quiet so everyone can hear the movie. The theater lights go off and just the screen lights up the room.

• Cooperative sentences explain how others may help the child.

Many people will watch the movie in the theater. If I need to use the bathroom or take a break, I can ask an adult in a quiet voice so other people can still hear the movie.

• Partial sentences encourage the child to “fill in the blank,” suggesting what will happen next or how someone will respond. Any of the above sentences can be written as a partial sentence.

If I want to come back to the theater to watch another movie, I (need to sit quietly through the entire movie). Going to a movie in the theater (is fun)!

Once you have the structure for your visual support story, you can add images and other features using one of several software programs. Here are a few options.**

Does your child like dinosaurs? Super heroes? Fairy tales? You can create visual support stories using those and other popular characters with Kreative Komix. Available in a range of genres, this comic book–making software tool offers a variety of layouts and the ability to add thought and text bubbles. Microsoft PowerPoint

Although not intended as a tool to create visual support stories, PowerPoint can be used for just that. It offers several templates and accepts a variety of file formats, including image, sound, recorded speech, and video files. Tar Heel Reader

With Tar Heel Reader, you can create visual support stories and illustrate them with your own pictures or royalty-free images from Flickr. TheraSimplicity is a collection of tools, illustrations, symbols, worksheets, and reference materials you can use to create visual support stories. ToonDoo

This tool allows you to create comic strips complete with characters, backgrounds, and text bubbles. For children who want to create their own visual support stories, this tool can provide a new mode of expression. Because ToonDoo is a public domain and users have access to a large library of already-made comics, safety for children using the site independently could be a concern. toondoo.com, free

Vizzle

Vizzle includes a variety of tools for creating visual support stories. Using the Build-A-Book feature, for example, you can add voice, images, video, and more. Interactive hot-spots, for example, provide a greater level of support. Vizzle also has tools for creating games, matching boards, token boards, timers, and more. App Corner: IEP Checklist

App has been used as a shorthand term for applications and has recently become popular to indicate specifically a mobile application. App as a term grew more popular with the opening of Apple’s App Store which can be accessed through iTunes. In our new feature of Tech Notes App Corner we will highlight mobile applications that are universally designed or meet the needs of a specific learning style.

This month we have chosen to highlight the IEP Checklist developed by the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) in Virginia. The IEP Checklist is a tool for parents and educators to use as they develop the IEP. The app is free, easy to use and available in both English and Spanish.

Youthhood.org is a free Web-based resource for teens. It is a place for teens where all youth are welcome. Designed by staff at the National Center on Secondary Education and Transition, located at the University of Minnesota, it was created to help youth make the transition from childhood to adulthood. Aptly named rooms, such as The Hangout and The Community Center, help youth think about their future. This free resource contains one portal for students and another portal for adults. Most teens will use the site with an adult. This person is called the Youthhood Guide. Registration is not needed to visit places in the community; however, registration is needed to access personalized parts of the site such as the Life Map, a goal planning tool. Did You Know? Mentors Change Lives

Research has shown that mentoring can motivate youth with disabilities to build skills and take the steps needed to transition successfully from high school to adult living. Mentoring can take the form of personal meetings, e-mail exchanges, telephone conversaitons, leters, or any other form of correspondence. The University of Washington DO-IT Program (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) hosts an electronic community of teens with disabilities planning for college and careers. Connecting to Success

Connecting to Success is a nation wide electronic mentoring program, begun in 1999 by National Center on Secondary Education and Transition at the University of Minnesota (NCSET). Tech Tip: Handling Email Attachments

Most of us may already know what email attachments are, but don’t know what to do when we can’t open an attached file. Attachments are files such as Word documents, pictures, and PDF’s, that are sent through email. Always be sure you are opening files from a trusted source. Learn a few tips that may help you with files you have a hard time opening.

For instance, opening strange emailed attachments can be a quick way to get a virus. In fact, email is one of the number one causes of infection! But you can keep your computer safe by not opening emails from people you don’t know that have attachments. Also if you get a strange email from a friend with an unexpected attachment, be sure to contact that person first before downloading it, just to make sure it was really from them. And of course always keep your computer up to date and use virus protection software if you have a Windows computer.

When you receive an attachment but then can’t open it:

1) The computer says it doesn’t know what the file is,

2) the computer tries to open the file with the wrong program (i.e. The emails says it’s a text document but the computer tries to open it with iTunes) or

3) you get an error message that doesn’t make sense.

First, check the file properties (called file info on a Mac). On a PC, right click on the file and choose properties. On a Mac, control click and choose Get Info. Look at the file size: if it is 4KB or smaller, then something may have gone wrong when the file was sent so ask the sender to try again (most files are much larger than that, even simple Word documents tend to be 10KB or larger).

If the file size isn’t a problem, the next thing to check is the 3 letter file extension. Most files have a 3 letter extension at the end of the file’s name that tells the computer what type of file it is. This also helps the computer determine which progtam to use to open the file.

.doc = Word

.mp3 = audio file

.avi = video file

.rtf = rich text file

.pdf = portable document file

.ppt = power point

Sometimes the extension is missing and the computer gets confused. By selecting “Open with” in the drop down menu, you can tell the computer which program to use to open the file. You need to know what the file is for this to work. If you are not sure, then ask the sender or check the initial email for clues. When you think you know what type of file it is, click “change” (Mac: use the pull down menu) and choose the appropriate application.

For people with reading-related disabilities, e-book readers can provide easy access to a world of literature and information. These portable devices store and read electronic books, and their accessibility features can include text-to-speech, audio-supported navigation, and enlarged print. Not all the devices offer all those features, however, so consumers need to shop carefully to find the e-book reader that best suits their needs and budget. Here is a look at pros and cons of three devices.

Classmate Reader by Human Ware

The ClassMate Reader is designed expressly for students with reading disabilities or low vision. It has text display, full text-to-speech capabilities, and is packed with such powerful features as a color screen that allows users to customize the contrast, color scheme, font size, and line spacing. In addition to synchronizing highlighted text with audio output, which helps the user to visually track the text while reading, the device includes several study supports, such as bookmarking, voice or text notes, and a speaking dictionary.

The ClassMate Reader features a touch screen that can be activated with a stylus or finger. While text can be enlarged significantly for the reader with limited vision, the menus lack audio support, so the device is not fully accessible by persons who are blind. It retails for around $499.

Intel®Reader by Intel

Designed specifically for people with vision impairments, the Intel®Reader is a mobile device that quickly captures images of print text, converts them to digital text, and then reads them aloud. The device is also of value to students with reading disabilities such as dyslexia. It features computer-generated text-to-speech voices that are arguably the best available. The device is as

easy to use as a point-and-shoot camera. Users might need a little practice to properly align the camera with the printed page, but the device does a remarkably good job of capturing the page and text accurately and quickly.

About the size of a large hand-held camera, the Intel®Reader boasts full audio support for navigating menus. An optional device can be purchased to make the process of capturing large amounts of print material, such as chapters, more efficient. This e-book reader retails for about $1,500.

Kindle by Amazon

The most popular accessibility feature of the Kindle2 is its text-to-speech capability. Unfortunately, due to digital rights concerns, each book publisher decides whether this feature can be activated for its titles. This limitation becomes a major barrier for readers with visual impairments, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities. Another accessibility issue for people who are blind is the lack of audio support for the onscreen menus. Due to numerous complaints from advocacy organizations, such as the National Federation of the Blind, Amazon has promised to add audible menus and extra-large fonts to the next version of this e-book reader.

Access to the Kindle2’s menus is through a multi-directional toggle that can be controlled with a thumb or finger. The toggle works well for some people, but those with limited finger dexterity or strength may find it difficult to use. When doing a wireless search for titles, users can enter text with the built-in keyboard located below the screen. The Kindle2 retails for about $259.

When it comes to selecting an e-book reader, users have numerous choices, but the availability of accessibility features varies widely. By comparing your individual needs, preferences, abilities, and budget to the unique offerings of the devices, you’ll be well on your way to finding the best e-book reader for you.
